She specified she wanted a circle, handwritten kind of handwriting and some colour some where.
I began by looking at the images Charlotte takes. She uses the macro lense and concentrates on detail a lot. I had an idea to use the colour, or the image of one of her images within the logo.
These photos are from a series of paintings she photographed recently. I began by using one of these as the colour within the logo, because I think it's a waste to not use these. It depicts what kind of photography Charlotte does.
From Charlotte's idea of using a circle, I sampled one of the images and experimented how to show a circle with using that.
This experiment was using just type and the image and creating a circle in that way.
This was my favourite because I could really see this as a business card. Unfortunately after showing Charlotte these, I had to go back and work on it a bit more. Charlotte was wanting something a lot more simple and the colour only had to be simple. So I started with a very simple idea and developed it that way, so she was happy and got what she wanting.
I was reigned in with my design ideas after speaking with Charlotte and understanding what she was wanting. It was a bit confusing but making her explain it again seemed to work.
I went back to try again with the logo and use what she had said to me directly. These experiments were practise on using the clipping mask because I still wanted to try and use the images she sent me.
Using the images was really not working because it was hard to read and too small to even see there's colours in the text. So I had to just go back to looking at the type and using very simple shapes, rather than overcomplicating it.
These were experiments on using colour behind the text and position of the text. I liked the name outside the circle, this is because it can show that charlotte may think out side the box when taking photos. It also gives her space to write something unique like a little message for the person she is giving her business card to.
I showed Charlotte these two versions of the logo. The circles are used because she wanted them involved, but I put the blue on the inside, this was to give it colour but also to create some depth. A lot of people thought it was a lense that I spoke to, which works well for Charlotte.
She decided she preferred the type inside the circle and wanted to use it. However, the type wasn't hand written looking enough. So I had a look at some more and showed her these versions.
The Final Logo
Working with a client for only the second was good experience again. It was good to learn that sometimes your client will go for your least favourite design but than because I'm friends with Charlotte, I wanted to make her happy with the design.
I think if I'm confused with another brief from someone else, I will have to ask again because designing the wrong thing just makes the job harder when it shouldn't.
