Secret 7"

I chose to work Jack Garratt's song because after listening to them all, that was the first one I had an idea and a vision for. I looked at his facebook to know what he looked like, what is style of fashion is, if that fitted his music. He has a strong voice and a good look. The cover should reflect that.

I looked at other successful album and single covers with good illustrations on. The top two are very busy and too much for this kind of song, which is peaceful but then develops into a strong chorus.

These two covers are more suitable for Jack's song, something that's more calming to look at.

After listening to the song Worry more and more I thought using drawing would work well for this. I wrote some words down that sprang to mine while listening.

Steady Pace
Wooden Beat
Caring
Orange
Built
Lines
Height

I quickly sketched an idea of using the W of the worry and extending it somehow. To represent his long notes and powerful voice.

After digitising it I decided to not go for this idea because Secret 7" is a chance to do something quite different, which I want to make the most of. I had a stronger idea in mind.

I thought back to when I was a kid and when I used to use Worry dolls.

Worry dolls are very small hand made dolls, wrapped in colourful thread. They are supposed to take worry and anxiety away from someone who holds or rubs them. The look of these dolls are really good, the amount of colour and pattern is lovely in something the size of a match.

After looking at these, I thought of the idea of making Jack into a worry doll. It connects the both and makes for something visually stimulating.

I began by drawing Jack in black and white and from different angles, so I can could pick one for photoshopping and further editing. It was a lot easier to draw a few and then photocopy the final one for me then to colour in, in different medias.

This was a good way to work because it meant I wasn't stuck on the computer and I could experiment a lot more.  I decided to just use the straight on pose with arms down for the single cover. I think this communicates Jack Garratt and his song the most. Secret 7 don't allow you to write the name or artist and like it more abstract. This was my answer to it, you wouldn't know who or what song it is unless you know what Jack looks like.

From there I experimented with colour and media. I used pens, of warm and cold colours, watercolour, paint and coloured pencils.By drawing it out and working out colours before digitalising it means it is a faster process, and less editing to do.

Good colour, the texture is not solid enough or bright enough.

The pink arms don't match the yellow and blues. However, the yellow and blues aren't the strongest group of colours.

The colour of sleeves and collar are the same as his jacket. The colours work a lot more.

I like the colours but the style and colour doesn't match Jack's. Its far too feminine.

I chose to use the felt tip warm colour experiment because it suited him the most. I have used the colour from his jacket in one of his photos on Facebook for the collar, this is to signify that it is Jack. The neatness of the colour was important because I wanted to create a solid illustration so it's bold and clear and stands out. Once I was happy with the final Jack I digitalised him.

The sleeve needed a colour on it because if it was white there wasn't much to make it stand out. So a lot of editing was working out what kind of background was suitable. Since this is hand drawn I thought a textured background would work well.

I put 3 of the drawings on the sleeve because I thought Jack looked lonely. I think the texture works well because it gives the design another level. A reason for someone to look at it closer.

I liked the pattern that was created when scanning these images in. This is the back of the drawing and the lack of outline and more abstract look to it works well.

I thought I might as well use that and create another sleeve. A more abstract one.

There wasn't much to this design because I just selected a bit i liked and made it fit the 7 inch sleeve. I like the pattern and thing the bold colours will grab someone's attention.

I did attempt this but clearly there is no need for Jack to be on the pattern as well.

The finished sleeves.
