Lauren Coyne Photography Book

Lauren approached me again to work on creating a book of her images. She needed me to create the grid, set the pages up etc.

I'm not very familiar with layouts and book design so thought this would be a really good way getting some practice in. I looked at some books to get an idea of what kind of grid to use

Lauren wanted to book in a square format at a4 size. So I set the document up to be 210mm by 210mm.

I looked through these two books to get an idea of a grid I could use for a square document. I also was looking for inspiration on how to use the square format easily. Lauren did have an idea of what she wanted, so it was a case of me showing her my ideas appropriate to hers.

Lauren wanted to use full bleed images on one page. This page is a good example of how to use full bleed images and small ones together so the page isn't off balance.

I like the use of a smaller boxes as pin points throughout the book.

This publication uses a lot of small square images, which is what Lauren wants in her book opposite a full bleed image. The 4x4 images work well wit the text and larger images.

This is difficult to see, but this grid uses a 3x3 layout. They're all square formats and allows for images to be placed in correctly, so it matches the full bleed image opposite

I also looked at these spreads, which gave me a good idea on how to use full bleed images against smaller ones on the opposite page.

Lauren's requirements for book

- A4 Square Format
- Full bleed image on right hand page
- Smaller images 2/3 on opposite page
- No bodycopy or page numbers

I set up these 3 grids, that are similar but differ slightly.

This is the 3x3 grid. It allows up to 9 photos on the left page, all equally sized.

Lauren wanted to use different size images on some of the pages, so I explained the grid lines are easily edible in order to do this. Because of the time constraint, I had to set this document up and allow Lauren to drop the images in herself. Although before printing, I helped place all of the images in the correct place. Everything in line, sized the same etc.

This is the set up I gave Lauren in order to finish her book. The purple boxes were for her to know where to drop the image.
I finalised the overall placement.
